Freedom of Information: The Role of Community

C4 and JKP Zone 6 Selayang Municipal Council jointly organized a workshop on freedom of information with local communities on 8th April 2017.

Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) and JKP Zone 6 Selayang Municipal Council jointly organized a workshop on freedom of information with local communities on 8th April 2017 (Saturday). Two panelists, YB Amirudin Shari (as Selangor Executive Councilor / Batu Caves Assemblyman) and Cynthia Gabriel as Executive Director of C4 explained the importance of freedom and access to information. YB Amirudin Shari stressed the importance of the FOI enactment as part of check and balance mechanism for better governance.

Selangor as the first state to pass the Freedom of Information Enactment (Selangor) in 2011 can be a model for the federal government and other states in Malaysia to be more transparent. However, the Official Secrets Act (OSA) enacted in 1972 has been a hurdle for citizens to obtain information especially on government spending.

The program was attended by around 40 participants including community leaders such as Penggerak Beliau Tempatan (PeBT), Councilors, local NGOs and leaders of JKKK. Special thanks to Ahmad Irfan as a Council Member of Zone 6 Selayang for hosting the event.
