Press Statement 28 July 2020

JUSTICE SERVED

Overview

The Center to Combat Corruption & Cronyism (C4 Center) expresses the utmost commendation to the brave High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Ghazali for upholding the law as he delivered an incredibly important and much-awaited verdict on the SRC Trial involving the former Prime Minister Najib Razak this morning. It is an honour to the many whistleblowers who fearlessly exposed the multifold corruption of SRC Trial and 1MDB cases in the most hostile of environments. It may bear reminding that it took a change of government, to allow such thievery to be exposed. This profound message must resonate firmly with all those holding power in public office. Actions taken by leaders are under the scrutiny of the people and they can be held culpable for abusing the system.

Historic

This has set a precedent as it is the historic case whereby, never before has a Malaysian prime minister been charged and convicted of seven counts of corruption; abuse of power and misappropriation of over RM42 million from the state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s (1MDB) former subsidiary unit, SRC International Sdn Bhd. While he has a right to appeal, this verdict by itself has demonstrated the magnanimity of the crime, and that corruption has reached the highest levels of power. The abuse of power for his personal gain has been shamelessly exposed as Judge Mohd Nazlan ruled that Najib was complicit in the deposits of RM42 million from SRC International in his private account. The SRC International trial is only one of five criminal trials that involved Najib.
